What is MRD
  1. Technical equipment and Systems provide a fundamental input to the generation of overall ADF capability. However, without adequate maintenance, these systems and equipment will eventually fail to function in a safe and reliable manner which has the potential for loss of capability or human life.
  2. Maintenance is, however, an expensive business that needs to be carefully planned and executed to maximise system availability at minimal cost over the materiel life cycle. An over maintained system absorbs excessive maintenance resources without necessarily improving reliability or availability, whilst an under maintained system will eventually begin to exhibit unacceptable failure rates and poor availability that will directly impact capability and safety.
  3. The systematic determination of maintenance requirements is essential to continuing equipment and preparedness and, therefore, a significant factor in the efficient and effective delivery of military capability.
  4. Maintenance requirements for all technical equipment is determined through a formalised process called Maintenance Requirements Determination (MRD). This produces a comprehensive Maintenance Policy in the form of a Technical Maintenance Plan (TMP) and associated Planned Servicing Schedules (PSS).
